Congratulations on your new home! Owning a home is an exciting milestone, but there are some important steps to take care of right away. Here are some things you should do immediately after closing on a new home:
1. Change the Locks
It's important to change the locks on your new home to ensure that your home is secure. You don't know who has had access to the house prior to you taking ownership, so it's best to be safe and change the locks.
Tip: If the home does not already have smart locks, this could be a great opportunity to add convenience and upgrade your home. Smart locks are often Do-It-Yourself friendly and will allow you a quick way to secure your home.
2. Set Up Utilities
Often sellers will continue services through closing day, to ensure everything is working on your final walkthrough. If you had not already made arrangements with local utility companies to transfer service ownership, this should be one of the first calls you make after closing on your home. Setting up your electricity, water, and gas service are most important, but don't forget about internet service to ensure a smooth first day.
4. Clean Your Home
If you plan ahead and can leave your day open, closing day is the perfect opportunity to clean your home from top to bottom - so it's in the condition you want it to be in before moving in. Whether you are doing it yourself or hiring out, it is always easier to get a deep clean before all your furniture and belongings are in.
3. Get to Know Your Home
Take some time to get familiar with your new home. Getting to know where the electrical panel(s) are located - and if they are labeled properly, where water and gas valves are located for emergency shutoff, etc.
You will also want to check to make sure all the appliances and mechanicals are properly working, and check windows to make sure they are closed and locked.
4. Make a List of Any Repairs
Protect your investment. As you get to know your new home, it is a good opportunity to take note of any repairs that you will need to make - such as a broken window, drafty doors and any other work that prior owners may have previously neglected. This list will help you plan for future home maintenance costs and prioritize the repairs.
5. Celebrate!
Take a moment to celebrate your accomplishment and enjoy your new home! Closing on a home is a big investment and you deserve to celebrate such a big accomplishment of homeownership.
BONUS TIP: Get to Know Your Neighbors
I would suggest all new homeowners make an effort to get to know their neighbors. Introducing yourself and asking how long they have been at their property, or what they like most about the neighborhood, is an easy way to kickoff a new friendship.
